John,
Tomorrow, with family and friends underneath fireworks, we celebrate Independence Day – the birth of our nation, and most importantly, the birth of a vision and a collection of ideals.
I know that for me, it feels difficult to celebrate this year – and it’s not the first time. Last year, July 4th fell right after Dobbs stripped women in this country of their reproductive rights. This year, we’re toasting to freedom only days after the Supreme Court struck down affirmative action and upheld discrimination against LGBTQ+ folks.
It’s Independence Day, and yet, so many Americans aren’t free.
Patriotism doesn’t come easily when it feels like there’s so little to be proud of. Day after day, headlines are filled with vitriol and violence, legislation and court decisions attacking liberty all across the country, and politicians who seem bent on destroying democracy.
But we certainly cannot let love of country be co-opted by racists and extremists, and patriotism cannot be reserved for right wing ideologues.
Ultimately, amidst all there is to be ashamed of, there is plenty to celebrate and take pride in on Independence Day, too. America was founded on ideals – democracy, freedom, equality. On the day the Declaration of Independence was signed, our founders certainly didn’t live up to those ideals. Clearly, we’re still working toward living them to their fullest today.
But the bravery that came with putting those ideals on paper for the first time, and the bravery that comes with our trying to protect them today – that’s what I’m choosing to take pride in this July 4th. Values and ideals, things to work toward, deserve patriotism too.
It’s in that spirit that I chose to run for Congress. And it’s in that spirit that I’ll celebrate America tomorrow.
I hope you enjoy parades, good food, and time with friends and family tomorrow – I will be! Happy Independence Day. Together, we will continue building a nation that lives up to its true potential.
