Americans waste countless hours and billions of dollars filing our taxes.

The IRS is developing a free electronic filing tool of its own that would — at long last — give American taxpayers an alternative to costly tax preparation services.

Of course, the for-profit tax prep industry is aggressively fighting this commonsense and popular idea.

And, at the moment, the IRS’s service is only a pilot program.

But just last week, 99 members of Congress — led by Elizabeth Warren and Tom Carper in the Senate along with Brad Sherman, Don Beyer, and Katie Porter in the House — sent a letter urging the IRS to make its free electronic filing software available to as many Americans as is feasible next year.

Other signers include Sen. Bernie Sanders, Sen. Cory Booker, Rep. Jamie Raskin, Rep. Pramila Jayapal, and Sen. Raphael Warnock.

Americans should not have to pay profit-hungry companies in order to use a program to file taxes online. Thank you for developing a free alternative. We encourage you to make this software broadly available as soon as possible so that everyone will have a public option for electronic tax filing.

Thanks for taking action.
