Black girls will not be left behind

Two things happened last week that should have outraged (but not surprised) you.

1. A scathing ProPublica Article that called out Richmond Public Schools on the drastic learning loss due to the Covid 19 pandemic. The article reported an average loss of 1.96 years of math instruction and 1.45 years of reading instruction.
2. The Affirmative Action decision by the Supreme Court rolling back equal protection under the guise of "merit" and "colorblindness."

We know this: Black students will again suffer from a system that consistently leaves them behind. Michael Paul Williams of the Richmond Times Dispatch recently posed the question: "Richmond's school children are being left behind: What are we going to do about it?"

We can proudly say that Girls For A Change is here with solutions.

The Girl Ambassador Program: One solution of many

The Girl Ambassador Program was created to support girls in developing digital, professional, and soft skills, gain certifications, and get them ready for work and/or continuing education. This is a much needed solution to stand in the gaps for Black girls and other girls of color to ensure they have every opportunity to ready themselves for college and 21st Century careers.

GFAC has been building partnerships with Richmond Region school systems, companies like Capital One and The Martin Agency, and organizations like SEEDschool and Girls Who Code to ensure Black girls are not left behind.

Our Spring Girl Ambassador Program is currently underway, and we are excited to offer a special, Summer edition Girl Ambassador Program at Meadowbrook High School for Black girls and other girls of color. The Summer series launches Monday, July 24, and goes through Friday, August 4, with the opportunity to continue through the Fall and Spring Semesters, culminating in a paid summer internship in the Summer of 2024.
