Hi friend,
Democrats just passed a state budget that invests in our highest priorities and takes another major step towards making New Jersey more affordable for families planning for their future. From providing the greatest level of property tax relief in New Jersey history, to funding our public schools at unprecedented levels, to fulfilling our fiscal promises by funding the state pension system and maintaining a healthy surplus, this is a budget we can all be proud of.

Everything in this budget is about growing and strengthening the middle class, providing more opportunity – and more affordability – for hardworking families, and making it easier to retire in New Jersey. That is why over the last two years we committed over $6 billion in direct property tax relief, tackling one of the single greatest and longest standing affordability challenges our taxpayers face.
Simply put, Democrats just delivered more property tax relief than any Governor and Legislature have ever provided in history.
With the new StayNJ program, nearly all of New Jersey’s seniors will see their property taxes reduced dramatically, with many being cut in half. That’s in addition to the ANCHOR program that began last year, which is providing tax relief to homeowners and renters throughout the state. The budget also provides $150 million in Energy Tax Receipts-related payments to extend the Municipal Relief Fund for an additional year, doubling last year’s funding, which will reduce towns’ budgetary pressures and residents’ property tax burdens.
Clearly, we have shown a significant commitment to making our state more affordable. But that is not all — this budget will also lower prescription-drug costs for seniors, help hardworking families by expanding free pre-K, create good-paying jobs by building a green economy and fighting climate change, expand mental health services so our kids and families can get the help they need, help first-generation homebuyers achieve the safety and security of owning a home, and so much more to help plan for the future.
It is important to point out that we’re accomplishing all of this in a fiscally responsible way. This budget continues to fully deliver on our commitments to our pension payments and school funding, while also maintaining a healthy surplus.
We all know New Jersey is the best place in the nation to live, work, and raise a family — with this budget, we are also making it a place where it’s easier to retire and stay close to your loved ones. Democrats in the Legislature have once again stepped up and delivered the relief that middle-class families need.
Gratefully,
Governor Phil Murphy
Senate President Nicholas Scutari
Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin
