We’ll be blunt: Last year, our movement helped secure fair maps in states like North Carolina – but this year, the GOP is rolling back our progress.

In 2012, North Carolina’s maps were so gerrymandered that, even though both parties earned about half the vote, Republicans won more than twice as many congressional seats.

In 2022, the vote was once again evenly split between Republicans and Democrats. But this time, thanks to our efforts to secure fair maps, each party also won half the congressional seats.

But after the election, North Carolina Republicans did something unprecedented: They asked the state Supreme Court to reopen the case that had required the legislature to draw fair maps, even though the only thing that had changed was the makeup of the court. In what the Associated Press called “a windfall for congressional Republicans,” the state supreme court opened the door for the Republican legislature to go back to the drawing board and enact new, gerrymandered maps before the 2024 election.

John, Republicans are relentless in their efforts to undermine our elections – and that means we must be just as relentless in our efforts to elect leaders who will secure fair maps, protect voting rights, and strengthen democracy.
