Hi friends,
Today I’m in St. Croix to commemorate the anniversary of our 175th Emancipation Day.
After a series of revolts throughout the 1830s and 1840s, the Danish rules of the Virgin Islands drafted documents to dissolve slavery under a 12-year plan. But we refused to wait.
Slaves began organizing among themselves, planning, and preparing. And on July 3rd, 1848, at the sound of conch shells bellowing in succession throughout the island, thousands of enslaved people left their plantations towards freedom. Nearly 8,000 slaves rose up throughout the towns and plantations of St. Croix demanding freedom. As a result, slavery was ended that day.
There is so much to be learned from our history. At a time when extremists are trying to erase Black history and take us out of the history books, we can learn from our past: continue organizing and working together, and great things can happen.
We must continue standing with each other and fighting for equality and justice. I promise to keep up the fight as your representative in Washington D.C.
Happy Emancipation Day, friends.
