John, as many of us are preparing to celebrate our democracy tomorrow, we’re writing to say thanks to you – and to everyone who has made a contribution to power our work over these last few months.
As you know, Common Cause is laser-focused on state-level fights around voting rights and democracy – because that’s where the biggest opportunities for progress lie, and where the greatest threats first emerge.
That’s why we’re so excited to share three big victories – from North Carolina, Oregon, and Minnesota – that will help us keep pushing the needle forward to ensure We The People are the ones who decide our future, not vote suppressors, election deniers, or wealthy special interests.
Supreme Court Win from North Carolina
You’re probably just as thrilled as we are by last week’s HUGE win in our Moore v. Harper Supreme Court case. In an enormous win for voting rights, The Supreme Court outright rejected a blatant power grab that would give state legislatures unlimited power to manipulate our elections, without state judicial review.
This is a crucial victory for the checks and balances we all rely on – and a major loss for the politicians trying to hold onto power at all costs. But our work must continue as we watchdog state legislatures to stop anti-voter laws and demand Congress take action to protect our rights.
I cannot emphasize enough how important this win was for our democracy, and none of it would have been possible without you, John.

Stopping Constitutional Chaos in Oregon
One big win you might not have heard about last week, but that I’m sure you care deeply about as a Common Cause member, is that Oregon became the latest state to RESCIND all previous calls for an Article V convention.
This is huge, not just because we’re now one step further away from constitutional chaos, but because this is the first Article V vote where we won a unanimous, bipartisan majority. Our strategy is working – and we’re better positioned to STOP Article V for good.
Now, thanks to our success earlier this year blocking Article V in states like Montana, this well-funded plot to shred our civil rights is going to have a much harder time getting its way.

National Popular Vote Closer Than Ever to Victory
Last month, Minnesota signed National Popular Vote into law! And now, Michigan is likely to do the same in the next few months.
As you know, the National Popular Vote Compact is an agreement among states to guarantee their electoral votes go to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
It only triggers once states representing 270 electoral votes sign on – and once we add Michigan, which we hope to do in the next couple months, we’ll just need 50 more electoral votes (i.e. just a handful of states!) to permanently fix the broken Electoral College!

Common Cause works for a better democracy every day – and we’re only this effective because of people like you who are willing to put in the effort it will take to strengthen our democracy and secure it against the threats we face.
As we all still mourn the loss of our beloved, late President Karen Hobert Flynn, I feel like we’ve done her and her legacy proud – by making real her belief that each of us matters, and that we all deserve a say in our future.
In common cause,
Pam Wilmot, Vice President of State Operations
and the team at Common Cause
