Nurses unionize at George Washington University Hospital

On Saturday, July 1, registered nurses at George Washington University Hospital (GWUH) voted to form a union and elected the DC Nurses Association as their collective bargaining representative.

“This is a victory for every nurse who wants to provide better care for patients and safer working conditions,” said Dyana Forester, president of the Metro Washington Council, AFL-CIO. “To nurses at GWUH and all the members of DC Nurses Association, we see you, we value you, and your work matters.”

 

Compass workers win a raise!

1,000+ Compass workers at the World Bank, Smithsonian, DC universities and more ratified new union contracts last week. Senate Republicans may soon force a vote on whether to roll back an important rule from the U.S. Department of Labor that covers the guestworker (H-2A) workforce. If this Republican move were to succeed, it would make it easier to replace local workers in higher paid farm jobs with vulnerable, lower paid guest workers — and therefore drive down wages for all farm workers.
