Senator Kyrsten Sinema has teamed up with Republican colleagues to weaken the rules on how many hours of safety training pilots must complete before flying a commercial plane.
And with the Democrats' narrow U.S. Senate majority where every senator counts, Sinema's move has already resulted in delayed key Senate business. Her actions are unacceptable.
“Now is not the time to put corporate profits ahead of the lives of our constituents who may want to board a commercial flight in the future,” said Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL.). “A vote to [change the training rules] for pilots will mean blood on your hands.”

The current 1,500-hour training requirement has been in place since 2009, after a tragic plane crash in Buffalo, New York killed fifty people. But despite this saving lives, airline companies who make millions in profits are lobbying to repeal or water down this regulation.
As she struggles for her 2024 re-election, Sinema has raised over $150,000 from the airline industry in the past two election cycles, with the majority received in the last two years.
Sinema has lost key support among Arizona Democrats–with Rep. Ruben Gallego running to replace her. Now, she's willing to sacrifice airline safety to fill her campaign coffers.
