Let us catch you up to speed on the latest redistricting news, team.

→ Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Alabama’s congressional maps, ruling that the maps violated the Voting Rights Act by illegally diluting Black voting power.

→ Now, Alabama has until July 21 to enact a new map that includes an additional majority-Black district. This will mark the first time that Black Alabamans have majority representation in more than one congressional district in nearly 150 years.

→ And that’s not all. According to experts, the Court’s reasoning regarding Alabama’s maps may apply to ongoing litigation in states like South Carolina, and Georgia. Depending on the outcome of those cases, more states could be required to draw new, fair maps before the next election.

→ Here’s why it matters: Last November, control of the House majority was decided by just five districts. That means overturning gerrymandered maps – even in just a handful of states – will have major implications for the 2024 election.

New developments will be happening rapidly, so the NDRC’s fight for fair maps, voting rights, and a strong democracy has never been more important. Will you donate now to help us continue our critical work nationwide?

We cannot emphasize enough that now is not the time to grow complacent, team. Republicans know that their extreme anti-choice agenda is a non-starter with voters, so they’ll be fighting tooth and nail to protect their gerrymandered maps.

But as A.G. Holder has often said, “Unlike Republicans, Democrats don’t need to gerrymander to win.” That’s why the NDRC is resolved to continue fighting until we’ve secured fair maps in every state across the country.

Our work is made possible by generous grassroots supporters like you. Will you pitch in now to support the NDRC’s efforts nationwide?
