A PERSONAL NOTE

Good morning, friends! I hope that you've had a great week and that
you're looking forward to Independence Day this coming week. I have to
say, and I'm pretty sad not to be in the USA for that day, as it's one
of my very favorite holidays because it's so meaningful.

I've moved from an Airbnb on the outskirts of the city to a place that's
RIGHT downtown in the thick of things. (S
<[link removed]>ee the video of it on
Instagram <[link removed]>) I had a lovely
morning stroll and a delicious breakfast at a cute little cafe. I'm
trying to time my sightseeing for the early mornings and later in the
day when it starts to cool down. It's been in the 90s here and I hate to
admit it but I'm MELTING when I go out walking in that heat. So, I'm
changing my day around a little bit.

I have so many incredible photos in my camera roll and backed up to my
computer. I've got hundreds (at least) of pictures taken at museums and
historical sites that show the way things were done in the past. If
there's a diagram of the machine or information about how it works, I
always snap that too. I'm pondering the idea of compiling the travel
notes and photos into a document because I'll always be interested in
how to make my own tools and press my own oils and the like. I have
learned SO MUCH traveling and exploring, and I'd love to organize it
all.

I've always had an affinity for history. It's probably because my dad
always turned everything into a story when I was a little girl. He would
tell me about times past in the most interesting ways and what I learned
from that is that everyone has a story worth hearing - it just needs the
right storyteller to make it seem interesting.

I've been reading historical books, both fiction and nonfiction, since I
could first read. The first chapter book I ever read was Little House in
the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I was fascinated by their life in
that cozy house with the dangers that lurked outdoors. I remember
reading about how Laura savored her Christmas orange and hoarded her
peppermint stick and thinking that it sounded like the best fruit and
candy I'd ever heard of in my life.

I think this love of history is part of why going off the beaten path to
old places has always fascinated me the way it does. And really, it ties
into my preparedness mindset. Knowing how problems were solved, what
strategies have been successfully used, and how life used to be is so
very applicable to a potential life without the conveniences we take for
granted. It solidifies my belief that humans were made to survive and
that unless we're eradicated by a mutually assured destruction event or
some planet-ending meteor, we will survive the hard times ahead too.
Obviously, not everyone will make it - they never have. We've all gotta
go sometime. I guess that, in a way, history makes me feel safe.

It's important to plan for the future - that's been a consistent theme
throughout the ages. But it's also important to enjoy life, art, and
good food. It's essential to spend time with the people you love, and
it's vital to rest. Hard work is important, of course, but it's not
everything.

I guess what I'm saying is to plan your life around LIVING, not just
around working and prepping.  Take the trip, eat the food, read the
book, and kiss the person you love. You don't want to miss your chance
to collect every single experience that life has for you because you
were too busy grimly preparing for disaster. It'll come whether you prep
for it or not. So find some balance. Prepare with joy, not fear, and
find happiness whenever you can.
