Did You Know?
On July 4th, 1776 the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence ([link removed]) written primarily by Thomas Jefferson. Perhaps the best known and most uplifting part of the Declaration are these words:
"...We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed..."

Although some colonists celebrated the birth of independence by holding mock funerals for King George III as a way of symbolizing the end of the monarchy’s hold on America, we should remember that not all Americans were free. Slavery had existed more than 150 years when the Revolutionary War began in 1775 and was protected by law in all 13 American colonies when they declared independence from Great Britain.

Securing Freedom and Liberty in 2023
Recent Supreme Court decisions have many of us questioning the promise of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Yet, we still have the power of the vote which is a powerful tool for holding elected officials accountable and charting a course that uplifts all of us. Democracy works best when ALL citizens participate.

I am grateful to serve and represent the people of Charlotte and very much want to continue the work I have started as your At-Large City Councilwoman. I humbly ask for your vote in the 2023 municipal election.
