Fellow Conservative,

While Congress is currently in recess, Heritage Action’s work continues to equip conservatives for important upcoming policy fights. This week was marked by several huge victories at the Supreme Court, none of which would have happened without conservative grassroots tireless efforts to confirm justices to the court that will uphold the Constitution.

Heritage Action Acting Executive Director, Ryan Walker, joined Jan Jeffcoat on The National Desk to explain the current fight over the politicization of the Department of Defense (DoD).

According to the DoD’s website, its “mission is to provide the military forces needed to deter war and ensure our nation’s security.” Yet in October of 2022, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin bypassed Congress and issued a memo that illegally changed DoD policy to pay for the abortions of service members and their families. This new policy would also pay for any travel necessary to attain an abortion. Because it also applies to family members, this policy covers millions of people.

This is an obviously political move from an executive branch department whose only objective is supposed to be securing the nation by improving warfighting capabilities.

Congress has an opportunity in the National Defense Authorization Act to overturn the Biden administration’s policy. They should de-politicize the Department of Defense and National Defense Authorization Act, and keep them from being used as tools to circumvent the law. This would protect unborn babies and prevent the NDAA from being hijacked to facilitate taxpayer funded abortions.

This week, Heritage Action sponsored a one hour Special Report with John Solomon on Real America’s Voice to highlight the threat to election integrity that ranked-choice voting (RCV) poses.

Under a ranked-choice voting scheme, the highest vote getter doesn’t always win. Instead, it creates opportunities for candidates to win with marginal support. This method:

  • Disenfranchises voters
  • Prone to errors
  • Undermines the democratic process

Heritage Action’s Director of State Advocacy, Catherine Gunsalus joined the broadcast to break down what states have done to strengthen election integrity and combat RCV.

In three days, we will celebrate the birth of the United States of America with fireworks, BBQs, family, and friends. On that day, we will commemorate all those who, 247 years ago, took an incredible risk and battled the British Empire to create a land of the free and home of the brave.

The Biden administration however, will be celebrating by trying to limit your freedoms—including regulating the kinds of cars you will be allowed to drive. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a regulation that would decimate the automotive industry and have devastating effects on the American consumer.

Currently, 94% of all new cars sold are gas powered. But in just 9 years, Biden’s regulations would force that number down to 33% - dramatically favoring electric vehicles (EVs).

These new regulations will leave you with EV’s that are more expensive, less capable of traveling long distances, less capable of handling cold weather, made in China, and take 45 minutes to recharge instead of 5 minutes to refill a tank.

On July 5th, the public comment period for this regulation will end. Submit a comment before then to stop Biden’s gas car ban. These comments do make a difference. Public comments have already forced Biden to delay two major regulations.

Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard and North Carolina

This case challenged both Harvard University, and the University of North Carolina’s use of racial preferences in their college admissions practices. The Supreme Court found that the use of race as a factor in determining who gets admitted into a school is in fact a violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. This effectively spells the end of affirmative action in the college admissions processes. The majority wrote “Eliminating racial discrimination means eliminating all of it.”

Biden v. Nebraska

Tweet - SCOTUS Loans .jpg

Biden’s Department of Education (DoE) tried to transfer between $10,000-$20,000 of debt per each student onto the American taxpayer, both current and future. It relied on the HEROES Act, but egregiously overstepped the authority this act delegated to the DoE. This executive action was therefore ruled unconstitutional and Biden’s student loan bailout was struck down.

303 Creative LLC v. Elenis

Colorado law would have forced Lorie Smith to violate her conscience by compelling her to create websites and graphic designs that were in opposition to her First Amendment rights. The Supreme Court ruled that this Colorado law violated the First Amendment and is therefore unconstitutional, thus cementing a win for freedom of speech.

These wins would not have been possible without the work of the grassroots to confirm justices to the Supreme Court who will make decisions guided by the Constitution.

Thank you for fighting to keep America free. Have a great Independence Day weekend!
