Hi there --
There’s been a lot of chatter about generative AI, a form of artificial intelligence that can create words, sounds, images, and video, sometimes at a level of sophistication that mimics human creativity. [1]
AI has the potential for good, but we’re already seeing the opposite: Chatbots spreading misinformation, validating heinous conspiracy theories, creating propaganda, and even encouraging children to engage in predatory situations with adults. [2]
We’re sounding the alarm. Congress has a small window to regulate AI before it renders serious harm to our society and democracy, much like Big Tech has already done. What do you think:
Should the government regulate AI companies?Yes
No
Last month, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI and the creator of ChatGPT, told Congress he supports government regulation of AI. [3] And then, this month, he lobbied against the EU’s proposed AI Act claiming it was “overregulating." [4]
Friend, we’ve seen this playbook before from Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and other Big Tech companies calling for regulation—mainly as a positive PR facade—while running multi-million-dollar campaigns to defeat it. Last year alone, Big Tech spent $230 million to defeat bipartisan antitrust legislation that would have reined in their monopoly powers. [5]
Congress has a history of leaving new technologies unregulated until it's too late. What do you think: Should the government intervene to create real accountability and transparency for new AI technologies?
Generative AI has incredible potential. We’d love to hear your thoughts about what regulation is needed.
Onward,
