John,
Over a year into the brutal invasion of Ukraine, Unilever is still running factories in Russia – helping fund Putin’s savage war through taxes paid on the sale of Magnum and Cornetto ice creams.
The Russian state has killed tens of thousands of Ukrainians, decimated cities and unleashed environmental catastrophe. It has abducted thousands of children and brutally tortured prisoners of war. No company should be anywhere near this murderous regime.
But a new CEO is about to take over at Unilever, and if enough of us speak out to make this an issue on his very first day, we have a real chance of getting the company to pull out.
We know this works – pressure from Ukrainian activists just forced drinks company Pernod Ricard to announce it’s quitting Russia. If Unilever followed, it would be huge. Sign now:
Tell Unilever’s new CEO: stop the blood magnums!
After the invasion, Unilever promised it would no longer benefit from business with Russia. But a year later its Russian subsidiary has doubled net profits and paid 3.2 billion rubles (38 million euros) in corporate taxes to Putin.
Unilever claims to be a global leader on human rights. Its double dealing sends the appalling message to other companies that it’s fine to keep doing business with monsters, weakening the world’s ability to hold Putin to account and helping plump up his war chest.
That’s why it’s so important we seize this moment and pile the pressure on new CEO Hein Schumacher. He’ll be hoping for positive headlines in his first few days, not to get bogged down in negative PR about Russia. This is a huge chance for change.
The Ukraine Solidarity Project just persuaded Pernod Ricard to announce it’s leaving Russia – now they’re turning to Unilever. If we get behind them we could make this massive. Can you help?
Tell Unilever’s new CEO: stop the blood magnums!
Getting Unilever to pull out of Russia won’t end the war in Ukraine. But every company that refuses to do business with Putin means less money for Russian bombs, and sends a vital signal that the world will never accept his savagery.
