Many Americans saw this for the first time when he helped Mitch McConnell pull off a sham impeachment trial — but he’s been the same John Roberts for years, building a legal framework that has successfully put Republicans in power, helped the big corporations who fund his party, and disenfranchised actual voters all around the country.

One of the most blatant examples of Roberts’ hyper-partisanship was his decision that effectively ended a key provision of the Voting Rights Act, a crowning achievement of the civil rights movement. After Democrats won the presidency in 2008, Republicans made a plan to use the courts to undermine the VRA and suppress the vote.

John Roberts’ majority opinion in Shelby County v. Holder gave GOP operatives everything they wanted — it ended decades of protection for voters of color and ensured an easier, less democratic path to victory for conservative candidates.
