A Busy Summer Recess:

During this two-week summer recess from Congress, I've been busy getting out in the district, from Luzerne County 911 Center's 25th-anniversary celebration to the Wayne County Historical Society's Clinton H. Leet Cana Boat/Pavilion dedication and grand opening in Hawley.

Also this week, I was glad to bring back my 'Coffee with Your Congressman' events, where I hear directly from you to help me decide what to focus on in Congress.

These informal events provide you the opportunity to discuss your concerns and share your ideas with me on how to make improvements throughout Pennsylvania’s 8th Congressional District.

Science at its Finest Right Here in NEPA

Whenever I'm in the district, I also have the privilege of visiting area businesses and non-profits. This week, I toured Sanofi’s best-in-class manufacturing site in Swiftwater to learn more about their state-of-the-art technologies.

As the Ranking Member of the Commerce-Justice-Science Appropriations Subcommittee, I understand the importance of supporting advances in science for the benefit of public health. Sanofi, a global healthcare company that employs more than 2,600 workers right here in Northeastern Pennsylvania, is transforming the practice of medicine by turning the impossible into the possible.

More Federal Funding Coming Home:

Pittston Bridge Project and

Broadband Upgrades

As a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, I was pleased to announce two major federal funding awards coming back to our region.

The first includes $19 million for the rehabilitation of two bridges linking Pittston and West Pittston. This project will fund the design, right-of-way and new construction for the replacement of the Dale J. Kridlo and the Firefighters Memorial Bridges, including on-street bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure improvements.

Replacing the aging spans connecting these two municipalities will ease existing traffic congestion and alleviate residents’ long-standing frustrations.

Also this week, I announced that $1.16 billion is coming back to Pennsylvania for broadband upgrades thanks to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which I proudly supported.

Unfortunately, too many small and medium-sized businesses in rural areas of our district don’t have the digital tools they need to grow and prosper. This investment in America, and specifically rural Pennsylvania, is a game changer when it comes to getting connected to affordable and reliable high-speed broadband internet at home, at work, and in our schools.

Legislative Update: The SERVE Act

Earlier this month, I introduced The SERVE Act, bipartisan, bicameral legislation to ensure students who serve in the National Guard and Reserve will be guaranteed readmission to their schools following a deployment.

Under existing law, the readmission requirements for servicemembers only guarantee readmittance to an educational institution if the student is deployed for more than 30 days.

No student servicemember should have to sacrifice their future because of a short-term emergency mobilization. The SERVE Act is commonsense legislation to allow National Guard and Reserve members the ability to successfully pursue their educational and professional goals.
