During June, we successfully hosted two impactful events in the Dallas area: the Dallas Healthy Teen Conference and the YAB Crash Course. These events brought together a total of 78 youth and 20 adults, providing them with valuable knowledge and resources. During the conferences, a diverse range of sessions were offered, covering crucial topics such as consent, healthy relationships, reproductive health, mental health, STIs, LGBTQIA+, and more.

The content delivered was well-received by the youth participants, who expressed their appreciation for the informative sessions. It was evident that there is a significant need for comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education, as many highlighted the lack of such education in schools.
 

Advocacy Work Results in Statewide Wins as the 88th Session Gavels to a Close

In the recent legislative session that just wrapped up, our team advocated for and achieved notable wins including:

  • Requiring insurance companies to allow patients to obtain up to a 12-month supply of birth control in one pharmacy visit – the first beneficial bill addressing contraception to be signed into law in recent memory.
  • A historic $118 million increase for the state's women's health programs, including mobile contraception units to reach underserved areas of the state.
  • Working with a broad coalition of advocates to support extending postpartum Medicaid coverage from 60 days to 12 months.

We are very proud of our advocacy team who has worked tirelessly across multiple legislative sessions to get these important items accomplished! 
 

Professionals from the Rio Grande Valley will be gathering in McAllen August 23-24 for advanced training and technical support and access a network of experts with the latest information and best practices around adolescent health and more. Continuing Education credits for multiple disciplines will be provided.

New this year, one day of the South Texas Adolescent Health Summit on August 25, will be dedicated to teens and young adults ages 17 - 24.

The event is free and youth receive a $50 stipend for their participation. Share with youth in the Rio Grande Valley who may be interested!

The Texas Youth-Friendly Initiative (TYFI) is recruiting a 5th cohort of clinics to begin the18-month Adolescent Champion Model (ACM) intervention this fall.

Participating clinics receive professional training for staff, access to resources, stipends for improvements, and much more.

HFTX is Among Those Awarded a Federal Equity Grant

The U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services has awarded $68.5 million through cooperative agreements to support the evidence-based Teen Pregnancy Prevention  programs. These new, five-year awards will allow our team, among many others across the U.S., to continue working to improve sexual and reproductive health outcomes, promote positive youth development, advance health equity for adolescents, their families, and communities, support meaningful youth engagement, and increase awareness of and access to adolescent-friendly health services in areas that are typically underserved.
