When I was a student at Harvard I couldn’t wait until summer because so much of the year was freezing cold. In 2020, I relocated to Puerto Rico as many of you know. This means I live more of a “year-round summer” kind of life. And you know what? I thrive in the sunshine. It feeds me and activates the curiosity within me. This lifestyle change was exactly what I needed to better show up for work, family, friends, AND myself. And this is the part of thriving in the fight that I talk about in Chapter 2.

Something else I enjoy is traveling with my husband, Julio, and we’ve done a ton of that the last few months during Thriving in the Fight: In Conversation Across the Country. We’ve spent a lot of time traveling, mostly road-tripping, meeting incredible community organizers and new colleagues from across the U.S. Being in community is one of my favorite parts of the work we do.
Cuando yo era estudiante en Harvard, ansiosamente esperaba a que llegara el verano porque por mucho tiempo del año hacía tanto frío. En el 2020, me trasladé a Puerto Rico, como muchos de ustedes ya saben. Esto significa que vivo un tipo de vida con “verano todo el año.” ¿Y saben qué? Yo prospero en el sol. Me alimenta y activa la curiosidad dentro de mí. Este cambio de estilo de vida es exactamente lo que necesitaba para estar presente para mi trabajo, familia, amigos, y para mí. Y esto es parte de prosperar en la lucha que menciono en el Capítulo 2.

Otra cosa que disfruto es viajar con mi esposo, Julio, y hemos hecho muchísimo de esto en los últimos meses durante Prosperando en la Lucha: En Conversación por todo el País. Hemos pasado mucho tiempo viajando, más que nada en viajes en auto, conociendo a organizadores comunitarios increíbles y colegas nuevos de todos los EE.UU. Estar en comunidad es una de mis partes favoritas del trabajo que hacemos.
On the road
In the first chapter of Thriving in the Fight, I talk about the importance of writing your own story. I encourage Latinas and women of color not to “wish, wonder, and wait.” We have the power to change outcomes for ourselves, our communities and the world. I am grateful to have work that (usually) brings me joy! In San Francisco at our external affairs convening, which is the team I lead at Faith in Action, we assembled an incredible team of professionals to drive strategic communications and funding goals for the future. We know from years of experience, that soon, potential donors will renew their budgets and that we’re approaching a very important election year. While there are a lot of things outside our control, there are many things we can drive forward. It was so wonderful to have them all in one room, which we don’t get to do very often in our virtual world!
En el primer capítulo de Prosperando en la Lucha, hablo sobre la importancia de escribir la propia historia. Animo a las latinas y mujeres de color a no “desear, preguntarse, y esperar.” Tenemos el poder de cambiar los resultados para sí mismos, nuestras comunidades y el mundo. ¡Estoy agradecida de tener trabajo que (usualmente) me da alegría! En San Francisco durante nuestra convocatoria de asuntos externos, el equipo que yo dirijo en Fe en Acción, armamos un equipo increíble de profesionales para impulsar comunicaciones estratégicas y las metas de financiamiento para el futuro. Sabemos por años de experiencia que luego, los posibles donantes renovarán sus presupuestos y que nos acercamos a un año electoral muy importante. Aunque existen muchas cosas fuera de nuestro control, existen muchas cosas que podemos impulsar hacia delante. Fue muy maravilloso tenerlos a todos en un salón, ¡lo cual no logramos hacer con mucha frecuencia en nuestro mundo virtual!
