Black women are now better represented in elected office than ever before, according to Higher Heights and the Center for American Women and Politics’ 7th annual “Black Women in American Politics” report. A record 8 Black women are serving as mayor of the largest 100 cities; 10 Black women are serving in statewide elected executive offices, as attorneys general, controller, lieutenant governor, secretaries of state, and auditor; and, as of May, a record 372 Black women are serving as state legislators across the U.S. We love to see the progress being made and look forward to more Black women—as well as more New American women and women in general—stepping up to lead and shaking up politics as usual!

The Supreme Court’s latest decisions on abortion, affirmative action, LGBTQ+ rights, and student loan debt relief are a stark reminder that elections have consequences. There is a price to pay when we don’t elect leaders who share our progressive values and authentic New American experiences—and we’re paying it now, over the last couple days, as the Court has us traveling back decades. This is a call to action, and we won't sit idly by.

Immigrant Heritage Month is almost over, but the work toward recognizing, validating, welcoming, and protecting immigrant communities continues.

One way to continue that work is by joining the Welcome Corps, a new and permanent way for Americans to welcome refugees as they begin their lives in the United States. Thanks to the Welcome Corps, it’s now possible for groups of individuals and a broader range of U.S. institutions to privately sponsor refugees in their communities.

BIG news! Our President and CEO Ghida Dagher was just named as one of the 2023 Great Immigrants by the Carnegie Corporation of New York! 🎉

Joining her on the list are Ke Huy Quan, U.S. Congressman Ted Lieu, Alanis Morissette, and Pedro Pascal, among other inspiring trailblazers.

“At the age of nine, Ghida Dagher and her family fled civil war in Sierra Leone and sought asylum in the United States. ‘Having moved here as a refugee and growing up in communities of low income is real life experience that I take with me,’ she told the Arab American News in 2019. ‘It shapes the trajectory of my career. I often say that it’s my immigrant experience that grounds me, but it’s my American experience that propels me.’ From an early age, Dagher was active in her community, but it wasn’t until college that she realized her heart lay in public service work. In her early career, Dagher led multiple political campaigns, launched policy initiatives at nonprofits, and ultimately served as director of appointments for Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Declining to run for public office herself, Dagher instead became involved in New American Leaders, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to building a more inclusive democracy by training first- and second-generation Americans to run for public office. Today, she is the CEO and president of the organization.”
