Dear John,
Behind closed doors: the place where the shadiest deals get made.
So guess where House Speaker Kevin McCarthy wants to hold his commission to cut Social Security and Medicare?
If you guessed “behind closed doors,” you got it!
McCarthy knows that cutting Social Security and Medicare is politically unpopular. So that’s why he is looking for just one Democrat to serve on his commission, so he can call the outcome “bipartisan” and shift the blame from his party to Congress in general.
We need Democrats to stand together and boycott McCarthy’s cynical commission. Click here to send a message to Democrats in Congress: Stay united and protect Social Security and Medicare!
We know McCarthy and his Republican Party plan to propose drastic cuts to both programs, which are so essential to maintaining quality of life for millions of Americans. This is because the GOP will always fight any efforts to make the wealthy pay their fair share for the greater good.
We can count on the media to present the Republicans as the party of fiscal prudence, despite their profligate record of deficit-exploding mega-tax cuts for the super wealthy. In other words, for Democrats, this “commission” is a no-win situation. The only way to win this game is not to play!
McCarthy’s plan relies on finding at least one Democrat willing to go along with his scheme. We need to provide our allies with encouragement to stand firm and refuse to lend the commission any kind of fig leaf to disguise their true intent.
Only if we insist on holding this debate in the public eye will it be possible for voters to see the facts: Democrats plan to expand Social Security, while Republicans plan to cut it.
The contrast is exceedingly clear. We can’t allow McCarthy’s secret commission to blur the lines.
Tell Congress not to shroud such an important debate in secrecy. They must insist on holding the debate in the open, so voters can decide the future America they want.
Thank you for reminding Congress of the importance of open debate.
