Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

I hope you will join me on the Fourth of July [ [link removed] ] at the Capitol Hill Parade or the Palisades Parade.

This year, we also have an exciting addition to our local Fourth of July celebrations: in partnership with?the United States Air Force Band and Events DC, we will host the first-ever Fourth of July in the District concert [ [link removed] ], featuring performances by the U.S. Air Force Band, Wale, Black Alley, and Sirius Company. The concert, which will?be broadcast nationally on CNN, will begin?at 5:00 p.m. and will take place on Pennsylvania Avenue between 12th and 13th Streets NW. The concert is free and seating is first come, first served.

As friends, family, and neighbors celebrate together over the next several days, we are deploying additional public safety resources. We will have our Go Teams out on Monday and Tuesday. These are teams made up of non-law enforcement partners who go out in the community, especially in areas where we expect larger gatherings, and proactively engage residents. The goal is to keep people safe, to de-escalate any conflicts, and allow people to safely enjoy the holiday. If you see the Go Teams out in your neighborhood, say hello and thank them for their work to keep our neighborhoods safe.

We are also expecting some hot days ahead, so please check on seniors, vulnerable neighbors, and unsheltered residents. You can request free transportation to a cooling center for yourself or someone else by calling 311 or by calling the Shelter Hotline at (202)?399-7093.

Next week, on Friday, July 7, join the Mayor?s Office on African American Affairs for an expo that will bring together restauranteurs and food vendors who are passionate about food-based businesses. The event will offer attendees access to engaging workshops, live music, networking opportunities with leading industry experts, the chance to meet potential suppliers, buyers, partners, and DC Government regulatory agencies, and information about the latest trends, techniques, and tips to enhance your food-based businesses.

Increase in Reward for Reporting Illegal Guns

The Metropolitan Police Department wants residents to know that the cash reward for reporting an illegal gun that leads to an arrest and seizure of the illegal gun has increased. The minimum reward is now $1,000.

Tips leading to the arrest and seizure of a ?ghost gun? or a firearm equipped with an automatic conversion device are eligible for an additional reward of up to $5,000.

If you have a tip about an illegal gun, *call (202) 727-9099* or *text 50411*. Tipsters always have the option to remain anonymous. Anonymous tipsters are still eligible for the reward.

REMINDER: Minimum Wage Will Increase on July 1

This week, Mayor Bowser and the Department of Employment Services (DOES) are reminding residents that effective July 1, 2023, the District?s minimum wage increases [ [link removed] ] from the current $16.10 per hour rate to $17.00 per hour for non-tipped workers. For tipped employees, the wage will increase from $6.00 per hour to $8.00 per hour.

Stakeholders can attend a wage theft prevention webinar held by DOES to learn more about wage law responsibilities. The webinar will be held virtually on Thursday, July 6 @ 11:00 a.m. and individuals can register to attend HERE [ [link removed] ].

Jump In: First Permitted Swimming Event in the Anacostia River in More Than 50 Years

On Saturday, July 8, the Anacostia Riverkeepers are hosting the first permitted swimming event in the Anacostia River in more than 50 years! Residents can join the event to celebrate progress toward a swimmable Anacostia River. The event is?open to all individuals 18 and older who know how to swim.?Residents will be able to swim in the river during a designated 20-minute time slot.

Registration is required, and residents will be notified via email if there is a change in the event schedule.
