Renee Carlson Provides Comment on 303 Creative |
From the Desk of Renee Carlson, Chief Counsel, True North Legal
In the last two days, the U.S. Supreme Court has affirmed timeless foundational principles protected by the First Amendment in two significant cases regarding religious freedom and free speech. In a unanimous 9-0 decision by the Court, Groff v. DeJoy, a case vindicating the rights of a postal worker to honor the Sabbath, the Court makes clear that employers cannot leverage Title VII of the Civil Rights Act to discriminate against people of faith—religious employees cannot be forced to abandon their faith under threat of losing their job.
Today’s decision in 303 Creative v. Elenis, in which True North Legal participated as amicus in support of 303 Creative and Lori Smith, not only adds to the Court’s longstanding precedent regarding free speech protections, but further affirms the Court’s commitment to protecting free speech and prohibiting the government from forcing individuals to speak or convey messages with which they disagree. This decision reinforces lower court victories including Minnesota’s own Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals victory in Telescope Media Group v. Lucero, which affirmed the free speech rights of creative professionals. As Justice Gorsuch, writing for the Court, concludes in the 303 Creative opinion:
… [T]olerance, not coercion, is our Nation’s answer. The First Amendment envisions the United States as a rich and complex place where all persons are free to think and speak as they wish, not as the government demands.
This is a clear statement and directive from the Court that all Americans and Minnesotans should celebrate. As I have shared with clients, “It’s not freedom if it’s not for everyone.” These cases demonstrate a strong commitment from the Court to uphold the freedoms granted to Americans by our Constitution and Bill of Rights. |

Washington Stand: Trans Center Admits ‘Irreversible Infertility’ Is Side-Effect of Treatment |
By Joshua Arnold - Washington Stand
Gender transition hormones “may cause … irreversible infertility,” according to consent forms a Daily Wire investigation obtained from the University of Virginia (UVA) Children’s Hospital’s “Transgender Youth Health” Center, which offers gender transition procedures to individuals aged 11-25. The consent forms, which authorize puberty blockers and “testosterone therapy” for females, allow an individual to sign on their own behalf, or for parents to consent on behalf of their minor children. “Most of the kids are nowhere in any kind of a brain space” to discuss the reproductive regret many later face, WPATH-affiliated pediatric endocrinologist Dr. Daniel Metzger has admitted.
“So many groups try to hide the fact that there are these harmful side effects. Finally, at least we have it on paper that there’s some sort of admission,” said Dr. Jennifer Bauwens, a former clinical psychologist and now director of Family Research Council’s Center for Family Studies. “Testosterone therapy may cause transient infertility due to loss of ovulation or irreversible infertility due to ovarian tissue damage,” acknowledges the testosterone consent form. It advises patients to bank eggs “for preserving reproductive options.” |
