Dear John,
We just passed the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, stripping millions of women of the fundamental right to make their own reproductive health decisions.
Since then, states across the country have passed restrictive and dangerous bans on reproductive health care. In fact, since the Dobbs decision, half of the states in our nation have passed some form of restriction or outright ban on critical and often life-saving medical care.
As a doctor, I always valued the trust and confidentiality that exists between myself and my patients when it comes to sensitive and difficult health decisions. Let me be clear: politicians have no place in the exam room.
In response to the Dobbs decision, I proudly supported the Women’s Health Protection Act. This bill aims to codify into federal law a woman's right to choose make her own reproductive health decisions, while also safeguarding health care providers from retaliation for providing life-saving health procedures. I'm also proud to have helped introduce the Affordability is Access Act, which ensures that insurance fully covers over-the-counter birth control without any fees or out-of-pocket costs.
Rest assured, I will continue to stand against reckless attacks on women’s right to make their own reproductive health decisions. It is a true honor to serve Sacramento County in Congress, and I would like to take a moment to share a few important updates with you.
Be well,
Ami Bera M.D.
Member of Congress
