John, This week’s Supreme Court rulings have confirmed what we already know: The right-wing majority on the US Supreme Court is acting as a political rather than legal body, has stripped us of many of our most fundamental freedoms, and threatens our country’s most deeply held values. To return to a balanced, nonpartisan Supreme Court and restore our democracy, there is one solution: we must expand the Supreme Court. It is not constitutionally mandated that the Supreme Court consist of nine justices. Congress has changed the number of justices on the Court before and it can do so again. This Court’s actions have disproportionately harmed our most vulnerable communities. It has overturned a 50-year precedent establishing the right to choose, opened the door to racial and LGBTQ+ discrimination, favored corporate interests over the public interest, and set our democracy on a dangerous path forward for decades to come. If we want to protect the promise of equal justice under the law, the Supreme Court must be restored to a nonpartisan branch. Congress must pass the Judiciary Act, which would add four seats to the Supreme Court and block the far-right ideologues ripping our country apart. Sign the petition: Urge Congress to pass the Judiciary Act and expand the Supreme Court. In solidarity, Free Speech For People |
