America First Legal Sends Letters to 200 Law Schools Demanding the End of All Racial Preferences in Law School Admissions, Faculty Hiring, and Law Reviews
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, following the Supreme Court’s decision in Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President and Fellows of Harvard College, America First Legal (AFL) sent a demand letter to the deans of every law school in the United States, demanding that they cease discriminating based on race and sex in student admissions, faculty hiring, and law-review membership and article selection.
Law schools across the United States have been discriminating against students based on race for decades—admitting some students based on their race and denying admission to others with better qualifications just because of how they were born. They have reserved faculty positions and refused to consider exceptionally qualified candidates for interviews because they came from the wrong race or sex. They have allowed similar practices in student-run law reviews, even allowing students to accept articles based on the race or sex of the author.
America First Legal’s letter demands that law schools immediately halt these discriminatory and unlawful practices. It further puts the deans of every law school on notice: if they do not stop, America First Legal will bring legal action against them.
America First Legal is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the rule of law in the United States and defending the rights of all Americans to receive equal treatment under the law. Anyone who knows of or encounters discrimination based on race or sex in law schools across the United States should contact America First Legal at www.aflegal.org/equality.
Statement from Gene Hamilton, America First Legal Vice President and General Counsel:
“For too long, rather than being beacons of hope and serving as models of equal treatment under the law, law schools have used discriminatory practices that should offend every American. These practices do not just infect and affect legal academia—they then inculcate generations of lawyers who fail to appreciate the meaning of true equality, fail to advance the rule of law, and who fail to speak truth to power with their clients. We are ready to defend the rights of any American harmed by these unlawful practices,” said Gene Hamilton.
