Indiana Young Democrats Statement on Indiana Supreme Court Decision Upholding Total Abortion Ban

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — The Indiana Young Democrats are deeply disappointed and unequivocally condemn the recent decision by the Indiana Supreme Court to uphold the controversial law banning abortion in the State of Indiana. We firmly believe that this decision is a step backward for women's reproductive rights and a direct infringement on personal autonomy.

The Indiana Young Democrats staunchly support a woman's right to make decisions about her own body, including the right to seek safe and legal abortion services. This regressive legislation directly undermines that right, effectively forcing women into dangerous situations and denying them essential healthcare options.

By upholding this restrictive law, the Indiana Supreme Court has disregarded the longstanding constitutional precedent established by Roe v. Wade. It is essential to remember that access to legal, safe, and affordable abortions is not only a matter of reproductive rights but also a public health concern. Restricting such access puts the lives and well-being of countless women and girls at risk.

We urge the Indiana Supreme Court to prioritize the health and autonomy of women by reconsidering their decision and demonstrating a commitment to protecting reproductive rights. It is crucial that our legal system reflect the values of compassion, equality, and respect for personal freedom.

Additionally, we call upon Indiana lawmakers to prioritize the examination of evidence-based practices and comprehensive sexuality education when crafting legislation regarding reproductive rights. People must be adequately informed and empowered to make informed choices about their own bodies, particularly when it comes to reproductive healthcare.

The Indiana Young Democrats are committed to advocating for policies that promote reproductive justice, including expanded access to contraception, comprehensive sex education, and comprehensive healthcare services for women.

We stand in solidarity with reproductive rights organizations, women's advocacy groups, and concerned citizens throughout Indiana, as we continue to fight for a state where individuals have the freedom to make personal decisions about their reproductive health, without undue government interference.
