SCOTUS is why we can’t have nice things.

Another SCOTUS season has come and gone and with that, even more fundamental Supreme Court rulings have bitten the dust. Last year, the Supreme Court ruled that the very personal decision to get an abortion was best left to the men running state governments. This summer, the conservative majority struck down the affirmative action admissions process, ruled that it was legal for businesses to discriminate against protected classes, and condemned us to a debt-filled existence. They really said “HAGS!”

With the Supreme Court’s recent record of messy, for-the-plot decisions, Data for Progress and People’s Parity Project find ([link removed]) 50 percent of voters believe the Supreme Court has made life worse for Americans in recent years. This includes 69 percent of Democrats, 48 percent of Independents, and 33 percent of Republicans.

Legally questionable rulings aside, the Supreme Court has been an ethical disaster as of late. Justices Thomas and Alito have spent their spare time galavanting with billionaire Republican donors and Thomas refused to recuse himself from January 6th cases, despite his wife’s participation on the coup planning committee. Needless to say, the calls for judicial reform have never been louder. As a result, Data for Progress finds 56 percent of voters support requiring a supermajority of the Supreme Court to strike down federal legislation. This includes 64 percent of Democrats, 55 percent of Independents, and 49 percent of Republicans.

No one can truly encapsulate the conservative members of the Supreme Court better than Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson herself, who described her fellow justices as having “let-them-eat-cake obliviousness.” Yes, absolutely, the conservatives on the Supreme Court have Marie Antoinetted far too close to the sun, and it’s about time we implement reforms. We don’t need any more photos of Samuel Alito and his Republican pals posing with giant salmon.

Here are some other highlights from DFP this week:

Happy Glass Anniversary to Stonewall!

Fifty-four years ago, LGBTQ+ patrons fought back against police officers during a raid at the Stonewall Inn. The Stonewall Riots sparked the modern LGBTQ+ movement, and in 2023 we honor that legacy the best way we know how: a photo shoot at the Stonewall Inn with Vice President Harris and Andy Cohen.

While the LGBTQ+ community has achieved monumental progress (legislative milestones, judicial victories, The Ultimatum: Queer Love), they have also faced political backlash (anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, the very existence of Ron DeSantis, website designers who areoffended by LGBTQ+ weddings ([link removed]) ). While 53 percent of LGBTQ+ adults report they somewhat or strongly belong in U.S. society, transgender adults feel differently. Only 35 percent of transgender adults report that they somewhat or strongly belong in society.

With the Head Florida Man and his friends putting all of their energy into restricting laws for the transgender community, it’s no surprise that less than half of transgender adults feel comfortable dressing and acting the way they want (45 percent) or engaging in public displays of affection (46 percent) in their local community without fear of violence or harassment. This is compared to 67 percent and 59 percent of LGBQ+ adults who do not identify as transgender, respectively.

The LGBTQ+ community has witnessed a lot of progress over the past 50 years, but with that progress comes backlash from close-minded people who shouldn’t be allowed to participate in culture. Yellowjackets and Boygenius aren’t for you.

Once again, voters agree that everybody hates Kevin McCarthy.

Oh, Kevin. You really gotta stop trying to cut Social Security and Medicare man, this one is a political loser. We’re starting to think you just might be a masochist, and if you want, we can recommend a good therapist.

After the passage of the bipartisan debt limit bill, everyone’s least favorite Kevin went on Fox News to complain that President Biden “walled off” Social Security and Medicare during their negotiations. Now, he wants to create a commission to look at the entire budget and purposefully piss everyone off. In a new poll, Data for Progress and Social Security Works find ([link removed]) voters across party lines (72%) oppose Kevin and the GOP’s proposed commission to cut Social Security and Medicare. Only 3 percent of voters want to cut Social Security benefits.

The Republican Study Committee (RSC), a group of 70 House Republicans (ew), also recently released their 2024 budget proposal. The proposal included plans to raise the retirement age and slash middle-class Social Security benefits — two widely unpopular proposals. So unpopular, in fact, that their own party doesn’t support it. Fifty-six percent of voters support increasing Social Security benefits, including 62 percent of Democrats, 51 percent of Independents, and 54 percent of Republicans.

So Kevin, RSC crew, y’all have to slow your roll. Members of your own party want to increase Social Security and Medicare. Is this just for the plot? We’re not in the business of giving Republicans advice, but this seems like a losing path to go down.
