As I mentioned in the email below, our revenue has been falling behind our projections and we are struggling to make ends meet. Over the last few years, we have come to rely more and more on donations from Daily Kos readers and activists to keep producing the work you come to expect and trust from us.

Today, grassroots donations of just a few dollars are our largest source of income—helping to cover staff salaries, website maintenance and development, and run our email program.

Quite frankly, we prefer it this way. We are not beholden to some billionaire or megacorporation that comes with their own agenda. We are accountable to you, Jack, and the tens of thousands of other activists that support our work a few dollars at a time.

Jack, bad news, Daily Kos' revenue has been lagging behind our projections and we have been struggling to make ends meet.

Daily Kos relies on three different sources of revenue: community fundraising, advertising, and list building, in which Democratic and progressive campaigns pay for the opportunity to make their case to our readers over email. Unfortunately, last year we were hit by a perfect storm as two of these three sources started lagging behind their projections.

Like many news media outlets our advertising income has continued to shrink as internet behemoths like Facebook, Apple, Amazon and Google suck up an ever greater share of the digital advertising dollars and businesses cut their advertising budgets in the face of an uncertain economy. Meanwhile, new organizations got into the list building business undermining and disrupting our work.

Just as we have for the last few months, we have raised our June fundraising goal by $100,000 in hopes of making up that lost revenue. Daily Kos needs to raise another $69,648 by the end of June to reach our fundraising goal.
