Dear John,
Today, the Supreme Court of the United States legalized discrimination.
On the last day of Pride, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of a business owner refusing service to queer couples – effectively allowing discrimination against gay and trans people. This case is not only significant for LGBTQ+ people. All marginalized people who receive “protected” status under the law are at risk.
This is an outrage.
I broke down what this means for the most marginalized caregivers and disabled people who receive care. Watch now and share with your friends and family: [[link removed]]
2023 has already been one of the worst years on record for anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, as elected officials have pushed forward homophobic and transphobic legislation that includes drag bans, “Don’t Say Gay'' bills, and attacks on education.
These anti-LGBTQ+ policies and legislation has caused real harm to the LGBTQ+ community by threatening their access to basic human rights and causing them to face more discrimination in their daily lives. Queer communities already face profound and unique challenges when it comes to accessing care, as chosen families are often not recognized and older LGBTQ+ adults are 5 times less likely to access medical and social services.
The SCOTUS decision made today goes even farther by allowing discrimination based on identity and reinforces the anti-gay culture that already exists in our society.
LGBTQ+ people deserve to live their lives freely and with dignity — but that’s impossible when the highest court in the land is not on their side. We all need to join the fight to protect our LGBTQ+ friends and family members: whether it’s to be free from discrimination to love who they want, have their gender legally recognized, or to just be protected from the risk of assault and harassment.
All of us – no matter who we are, who we love, what we look like – will give or receive care at some point in our lifetimes. It’s so important that everyone has what they need to thrive because care doesn’t discriminate – and we’re fighting for a better system that serves us ALL, whoever we may be.
With care,
