John,
After last week’s by-elections, some commentators concluded that the PPC should just disband, since we have again failed to elect a member of Parliament.
They were surprised when I said we weren’t going away.
These people are so short-sighted!
Our society and civilisation are becoming decadent.
One big reason for this is that virtues like perseverance, resilience, self-reliance, and planning for the long-term are being lost.
So many people are obsessed with frivolous consumption and immediate gratification.
Our economy is crumbling under massive debt, and a majority seem unconcerned with becoming more and more dependent on government.
It’s no surprised some are telling us we should already give up!
But we, the PPC family, care about the future!
After only five years, the People’s Party has already become one of the main parties on the Canadian political scene.
If winning a seat was the only relevant thing for a political party to achieve, the political and media establishment would completely ignore us.
They know we represent something important. They just don’t like it.
The reality is that we are accomplishing important things, even if we haven’t elected MPs yet (because our vote is too geographically spread out in our electoral system at the moment).
We are giving disaffected voters a voice, and fighting for overlooked but important principles and policies.
We are raising taboo issues that other parties won’t touch.
We are spreading alternative information and viewpoints, and moving the Overton window of what is acceptable political discourse.
We are putting pressure on the other parties, and offering a clear alternative at elections now and in the future.
These are all worthwhile and important long-term objectives for a political party.
John, we’re not about to give up.
