Statement from Representative Adriano Espaillat on the Supreme Court’s Slate of Rulings Reversing Decades of Progress

NEW YORK, NY – Today, Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) issued the following statement regarding the latest Supreme Court rulings decided this week.

"I am deeply disheartened by the latest slate of rulings from this far-right, extreme Supreme Court that seeks to roll back decades of progress we have made as a nation," said Rep. Espaillat. "To deny service to anyone based on who they love is an affront to our American values and a bigoted violation of the basic rights we all deserve simply because we are human.

"Additionally, the denial of student loan debt forgiveness will automatically set millions of American borrowers on a path toward financial spiral and on the precipice of default.

"And last, but certainly not the least of these, is this MAGA Court’s decision to eliminate affirmative action from college admissions—a decision that will be detrimental to students of color and will reverberate across all facets of our lives. Racism still exists and disparities based on race are still present in the national admissions process. This is not a thing of the past, and ending affirmative action only further entrenches racial inequality in education—period.

"These rulings are setbacks, and we must fight to ensure that the actions we take today will create a stronger, more equal and just society for future generations."

Representative Espaillat is the first Dominican American to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and his congressional district includes Harlem, East Harlem, West Harlem, Hamilton Heights, Washington Heights, Inwood, Marble Hill and the north-west Bronx. Declaración del congresista Adriano Espaillat sobre los fallos de la Corte Suprema que Revierten Décadas de Progreso

NEW YORK, NY – Hoy, el congresista Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) emitió el siguiente comunicado sobre los últimos fallos de la Corte Suprema decididos esta semana.

“Estoy profundamente desalentado por la última ronda de fallos de esta Corte Suprema de extrema derecha que busca hacer retroceder décadas del progreso que hemos logrado como nación”, dijo el Rep. Espaillat. "Negarle un servicio a alguien basado en a quién ama es una afrenta a nuestros valores estadounidenses y una violación intolerante de los derechos básicos que todos merecemos simplemente porque somos humanos.

"Además, la denegación de la condonación de la deuda por préstamos estudiantiles colocará automáticamente a millones de prestatarios estadounidenses en camino a una espiral financiera y al precipicio del incumplimiento de pago de deuda.

"Y por último, pero ciertamente no menos importante, está la decisión de este Tribunal MAGA de eliminar la acción afirmativa de las admisiones universitarias ―una decisión que será perjudicial para los estudiantes de color y repercutirá en todas las facetas de nuestras vidas. El racismo aún existe y las disparidades basadas en la raza todavía están presentes en el proceso de admisión nacional. Esto no es cosa del pasado, y poner fin a la acción afirmativa solo arraiga aún más la desigualdad racial en la educación ―punto.

"Estos fallos son retrocesos, y debemos luchar para garantizar que las acciones que tomemos hoy creen una sociedad más fuerte, más igualitaria y más justa para las generaciones futuras".
