Through conversations, we have noticed that people often aren’t ready to discuss how abortion will play a massive role in November. But in Virginia, only two votes stand in the way of a total abortion ban, so we cannot afford to ignore this critical fact: when abortion is on the ballot, we win.

The stakes are high. If we don’t elect a pro-choice majority in November, Governor Youngkin will “gleefully” sign an abortion ban into law. In fact, during his State of the Commonwealth Address, he said: “It is clear Virginians want fewer abortions, not more.”

Poll after poll says otherwise. A vast majority of Virginians want abortion rights to be protected, and that is why they turned out to defeat an anti-choice incumbent and replace him with a pro-choice champion last Tuesday. This November, all 40 State Senate seats and all 100 State House seats are up for election in redrawn, untested districts. This is our best opportunity in a generation to build a pro-choice majority at the state level. But if we fall short and Republicans gain control, they will build on their previous attacks – and introduce, pass, and sign legislation to ban abortion outright in the Commonwealth.
