Dear Friend of CDT,
Today, I’m pleased to share the 2022 CDT Annual Report, “A Path Forward for Democracy.” From Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the Biden Administration’s inaugural Summit for Democracy to the finalization of the EU’s new rules for online platforms and the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of abortion protections, events around the world clearly illustrate the importance of technology to democracy and human rights.
Authoritarianism is spreading in many regions, emphasizing the need for an alternative vision for modern technology governance that enhances democratic values. CDT was focused on building that vision in 2022, reminding governments and companies that — in the face of so many challenges to democracy and rights worldwide — policies protecting people’s privacy, supporting free expression, combating inequality, and fostering civic space have never been more urgent.
We convened broad coalitions, urging both democratic governments and a wide range of civil society groups to come together under big tents and provide strong support for human rights in the digital world, on issues like encryption, reproductive privacy, and the governance of AI.
CDT’s partners, staff, Board, Advisory Council, Fellows, and donors are the ones who make our work possible, and I am deeply grateful to them and all of you for fighting for democracy in a digital world and engaging with CDT in 2022. We couldn’t do it without you.
With gratitude,
Alexandra Reeve Givens
