John,
- The New York Times
- ProPublica
- The Hill
- Vox
- NBC
- CNN
These are major platforms CREW has been featured in, in just the past two weeks alone—and this list isn’t even all of them.
Our new investigations include breaking the news that there’s actually no record of Trump sending feds to help Ron DeSantis win his Florida gubernatorial election in 2018, despite Trump claiming he did. We also requested records of threats to election workers in Colorado alongside Colorado Common Cause, a CO-based pro-democracy organization, and in Nevada alongside NAACP Las Vegas.
Some of our latest research revealed that former Senator Pat Toomey took a position advising the company Coinbase after killing the ENABLERS Act, a financial anti-corruption measure that Coinbase itself lobbied against. It wasn’t the first time he took a position in an industry that was against the bill, which is just part of why we need Congress to ensure that its members are serving their constituents rather than a future employer by expanding the Ethics in Government Act.
On CREW’s legal front, Executive Vice President Donald Sherman testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee in support of the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency Act, and was featured on CNN, TheGrio, and CREW’s Instagram. TheGrio also published Sherman’s new op-ed with Emory University professor Carol Anderson discussing how a conviction won’t stop Trump from holding office, but the 14th Amendment’s disqualification clause could. Our newly released video featuring Sherman explains in detail how Trump is constitutionally disqualified from office under that amendment.
CREW’s Chief Ethics Counsel Virginia Canter also provided key commentary to major outlets. She spoke to the New York Times about Chris Christie’s conflicting interests and ties to Trump, and the ethics concerns surrounding Trump’s new real estate deal in Oman—which made NYT’s Quotation of the Day. She also spoke with NBC about ethical concerns for public officials with business interests amid controversy about N.H. Gov. Chris Sununu’s family mining business.
Canter is also right there in the thick of ProPublica’s breaking story on Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito taking a luxury fishing vacation with a GOP billionaire—who later had 10+ cases before the court. She then spoke to Vox for their story: The Supreme Court has an ethics problem. Justice Alito’s fishing trip is the latest proof. And just days before the news of Alito broke, we put out an analysis describing Harlan Crow’s deep dark money connections right on the heels of Justice Clarence Thomas’s ethics scandal.
