[1]U.S. Senator Chris Murphy

It's deadline day, and I need to ask a favor. Yes, this is a fundraising ask, and I owe it to you to explain why this matters. So here we go.

The worst part of this job is asking people to contribute to my campaign. I hate how big money dominates our politics. The influence of corporate and dark money is undoubtedly a corrosive force on our democracy.

But I can’t just stick my head in the sand and ignore it. It would put a huge target on my campaign from far-right billionaires and super PACs that can spend limitless sums of money.

And frankly, people deserve to know that I’m putting in the work. No one is entitled to your vote or a Senate seat. It’s my job to legislate in the Senate like you elected me to do. And if I want to keep doing that, it means I need to be organizing on the ground to earn people’s vote.

That’s also why I’m building a people-powered campaign from start to finish. Unlike most people in Washington, I’m not taking a dime of PAC or corporate money, but that requires me to lean on you a bit more.

I wish the money we had already raised would be enough that I never had to ask again, but there’s no way around it. Senate races are just expensive, and I believe that doing this the right way makes elected officials and our party more responsive to the people.

So if you can, please contribute whatever you can before our official FEC deadline hits at midnight. I cannot do this alone. It makes a difference.

I’m sorry I’ve asked so much recently. Please know that I would not make this ask if it wasn’t so important. The gun lobby and corporate special interests are watching this deadline. If I report weak fundraising numbers at the end of the second reporting quarter, they are prepared to spend big.

So thank you again for having my back and helping us show that we’re ready for whatever they throw our way.

Every best wish,

Chris Murphy
