Hey John, My name is Ty McFarland, and I am the new Director of Communications and Membership at NCLCV. I want to share a little bit about myself and my background. I was a hyperactive 90’s kid, so I spent most of my time playing in the Rocky Mountains in Utah. Being outside instilled in me a love for the environment, and my parents instilled in me a love for people and community. While I spent most of my life in Utah, once I tried North Carolina barbecue, I knew I could never move back. I came to North Carolina after earning my B.S. in Biodiversity and Conservation, and working as a botanist for the U.S. Forest Service. I found I wanted to work to resolve bigger threats, like climate change, environmental and social injustices, so I pursued my Master’s of Environmental Management at Duke University. As part of my program, Dan Crawford hired me as an intern at NCLCV. I learned that right now is the most important time to work in politics. These next few years will really dictate the future political and natural environment in North Carolina. I am honored to be brought back to work for one of the most influential organizations in the state, and one that is committed to social justice as much as it is to the environment. I want you to know I am committed to bringing about social and environmental justice. I will do so at NCLCV by connecting you to marginalized communities and their stories. I will bring you the most thoroughly researched information about North Carolina politics, as well as provide you with the tools and opportunities to advocate for yourself, for your families, and for your communities. I hope you will continue to get involved with NCLCV. Excited to work with you!
P.S. Apart from my environmental work and advocacy, I enjoy most sports, but especially gymnastics. I competed competitively throughout high school and college, and I now coach at a local gym. While I was at Duke, I was proud to be the mascot for two years and became a die-hard Duke fan. I enjoy many outdoor activities, and I am always looking for great places to visit with friends and good food. Send me any of your recommendations! |
