** Spotlight on Comm/Unity
------------------------------------------------------------
In today’s newsletter we are highlighting Comm/Unity, a network of communicators from 17 organizations that IDP proudly anchors. Comm/Unity’s vision is to “dismantle criminalization in word and indeed,” with a focus on the intersection of immigration and the criminal-legal system. The network seeks to build a new “common sense” where no human being is seen as disposable. To achieve this, Comm/Unity develops values-based messages, ([link removed]) creates resources for advocates and journalists ([link removed]) , and offers trainings. Comm/Unity also provides strategic support to key campaigns challenging criminalization, including advocacy efforts and case campaigns. In recent years, the network has trained approximately 600 people and generated hundreds of news stories. You can learn more on the Comm/Unity website ([link removed]) !
** This Pride Month, Support #PrideInNataly!
------------------------------------------------------------
As Pride Month comes to a close, IDP invites supporters to join us in taking action ([link removed]) to support Nataly Marinero. Nataly is a Salvadoran trans immigrant and survivor of domestic violence. He is at risk of being transferred to ICE on his release date from state prison in California. Nataly fled El Salvador at age 17 due to the ongoing violence he faced as a trans person, and if deported, his life would be in danger. Asian Prisoner Support Committee, California Coalition for Women Prisoners, and Survived & Punished have launched a vibrant #PrideinNataly campaign to stop Nataly’s transfer to ICE. Use the action toolkit available at bit.ly/PrideInNataly ([link removed]) to find ways to support the #PrideinNataly campaign by calling on Gov. Newsom to stop Nataly’s transfer to ICE and raising awareness through social media.
From California to New York, IDP joins advocates working to end local and state collusion with ICE, including the “double punishment” that Nataly is facing. IDP is campaigning for passage of New York for All ([link removed]) to end New York State collusion with ICE and ICE OUT! NYC ([link removed]) to restrict New York City from collusing with ICE; Comm/Unity is providing comms support to efforts to end ICE transfers in CA.
** Towards Freedom Trainings
------------------------------------------------------------
The Comm/Unity network is launching a new round of its “Towards Freedom” trainings this year. This interactive workshop explores how humans take in information, make decisions, and develop opinions--and how the words we use can bring people along with us. During the workshop, participants learn about opinion research on criminalization and detention issues, values-based message, and how to avoid the “good vs. bad” immigrant narrative - with plenty of opportunities for practice.
