Today, the Supreme Court struck down President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan to cancel up to $20,000 in debt.

We are deeply disappointed by this decision, as it comes after years of fierce advocacy from organizers all across the country who have been fighting for necessary student debt relief and economic prosperity. The effect of this decision will have devastating consequences on the lives of millions of Americans. 

Excessive debt has been debilitating in taking away from our ability to pay for food, housing, health care, and to start saving for our future. Plus, racial and gender inequalities in higher education translate to student loans as well — Black and Brown borrowers and women disproportionately hold student debt, yet are too often not given the same financial resources as other borrowers. 

Today’s decision is undoubtedly a loss for intersectional economic justice. But it’s clear now more than ever: Higher education must be made accessible. This decision will not stop our movement — it only fuels our fire.

By striking down this plan, our government has missed a crucial opportunity to truly serve the people who power this nation. But we need to keep the drumbeat going because our fight doesn’t end here.

Point blank: Education should be accessible. We’re placing pressure on our leaders to hear our generation’s call to lessen the financial burden of achieving our higher education goals.
