As we’ve seen in states across the country, school board races are important. That’s why Her Bold Move has been excited to support some remarkable candidates for school board, and plans to continue this initiative for years to come.

Janelle Astorga is a product of the Albuquerque Public Schools, and she has been a youth voice and youth rights activist since she was 13 years old. With her years of experience working in schools and advocating for her community, she has proven that she will fight for every student. If elected, she will be the youngest person ever to be on this school board.

Janelle wants to combat issues such as harsh dress codes and double standards for girls, the gratuitous issuance of in-school suspensions, and the fact that some schools in her district only allow students three bathroom passes per YEAR. 😳

She’s also fighting to preserve many positive aspects, including a phenomenal bilingual program, ethnic studies programs, and a safe space for undocumented students and LGBTQ students. She’s working to defend the schools against the national trend of banning books and defunding these programs. She stated, “I will be an advocate and a voice with experience to be able to push back on dismantling all my communities' hard work.”

This school board is currently “right-leaning”, so Janelle’s voice is even more critical. Janelle knows students in Albuquerque Public Schools deserve better. She is focused on students’ mental health and safety, uplifting their voices, and serving as an advocate for young women in her district.
