OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER FOR THE 3RD ANNUAL OBAMA DINNER:
Congressman Hakeem Jeffries!
|
ICYMI: Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) has graciously accepted our invitation to be the keynote speaker for the 3rd Annual Obama Dinner!
The Chair of the House Democratic Caucus, Jeffries, who has represented parts of New York City since 2013, sits on the House Judiciary Committee, and was also one of the House impeachment managers alongside Colorado's own Representative Jason Crow!
Congressman Jeffries is an attorney who received his JD from New York University. He is married to Kennisandra Arciniegas-Jeffries, and they have two kids.
Congressman Jeffries made headlines when, during a speech he gave before the Senate on day two of the impeachment trial, he quoted deceased rapper Biggie Smalls, who also hailed from Brooklyn:
“We are here, sir, to follow the facts, apply the law, be guided by the Constitution, and present the truth to the American people. That is why we are here, Mr. Sekulow, and if you don’t know, now you know.”

Volunteer of the Week: Susan C.
|
Meet Susan -- a hardcore Dem who's not only a amazing volunteer, but who also serves as the Prowers County Democratic Party Chair! She took a few minutes to tell us why she's proud to be a Democrat, and why she does the work she does!
Prowers County Democratic Party Chair Susan Crites has had an extraordinary journey in service to the Democrats in Colorado, starting in 2003 when she decided to become involved in politics. After becoming interested in what Howard Dean was doing, Susan contacted the then-chair of the Prowers County Dems to have the first meeting: Susan, the chair, and the chair’s mom were the first meeting! She worked hard to build the party’s presence in Prowers County, despite incursions of Republican strength in that bright-red corner of Colorado, fighting the pressure from Republican activists but never giving up. Recently, the Prowers County Dems have set up a meeting place at the Book Depot bookstore in Lamar, with its perfect blue walls: it’s a place to”breathe the blue air,” Susan says.
Because there’s no really strong local newspaper, Susan has developed two tactics recently to reach out to not only Democratic voters, but also young people: first, she’s printed up a flyer to post everywhere she can think of in Lamar. What’s unusual about this flyer is that it’s bipartisan: instead of listing just the Democratic caucauses coming up in March, it also includes information on contacting the local Republican party about its caucauses. Susan received this information from her collaboration with the chair of the Prowers County Republican Party, which speaks volumes for her sense of fairness and cooperation. But the best idea yet is that the Dems are running a notice in the Lamar High School newspaper, which is published six times a year! The notice states that all 17-year-olds who will be 18 by the time of the presidential election are eligible to register to vote now, and the notice will be printed three times this semester. It looks like a very effective way to reach these high school students in a fair way: the notice has no named sponsors, as per the wishes of the high school, but it’s the work of Prowers County Dems.
Susan admits freely that her superpower is the ability to explain just about anything to anyone, a skill she developed working with her son, who has a learning disability. It seems that she’s putting that superpower to great use with the Prowers County Democratic Party.

"'Jason’s chillin’ playlist,' little sleep and Dumbledore"
|
U.S. Rep. Jason Crow, D-Aurora, and other House Democratic impeachment managers, meet at the U.S. Capitol.
|
Over the course of the impeachment hearings, amidst all the hot air and bloviating from Team Trump, the House Democrats chosen to be impeachment managers kept their cool and delivered the facts on President Trump's egregious abuse of power. One of those managers was Colorado's own Jason Crow, Congressman from CD6.
A surprise pick, Congressman Crow was quickly introduced to the national stage, and the former Army Ranger rose to the occasion, impressing his colleagues on the House Dems impeachment team.
From the Colorado Sun (February 6, 2020):
“Jason’s chillin’ playlist,” little sleep and Dumbledore: How Colorado’s congressman handled being an impeachment manager
Adam Schiff didn’t see any unsteadiness in U.S. Rep. Jason Crow as he watched the Aurora Democrat and Army combat veteran maneuver through the most high-profile period of his political life.
To Schiff, Crow appeared almost comfortable in his role as an impeachment manager in the Senate trial of President Donald Trump, trying to make the case to the Senate — and the American people — that the leader of the free world should be removed from office.
“I think that people who have seen combat have a comfort in their own skin doing anything, in taking anything on,” said Schiff, a California Democrat, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and the lead impeachment manager. “You wouldn’t know that he hadn’t been doing this all his life. He didn’t really seem to show any of the strain of it or any of the nervousness you might expect.”
Click here to read more of this exclusive behind the scenes from the Colorado Sun that took a look at Congressman Crow's experience as an impeachment manager.
The Congressman was quickly recognized by national political observers on social media, who were all impressed by the freshman.

If you have the opportunity, be sure to also read this feature from 5280 that reviews Congressman Crow's first year, and this Rolling Stone article that also took a look at Congressman Crow's experience as an impeachment manger before the U.S. Senate's 3rd ever impeachment trial.
If you have an opportunity today, be sure to give Jason a call and thank him for his courage, for his service to our country, and for standing up for our Constitution at (202) 225-7882 or (720) 748-7514.

DeGette Protects Colorado's Wilderness!

U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette gets Colorado Wilderness Act out of the House
By Colorado Politics
"The White House and Republicans, who control the U.S. Senate, have aligned against the set aside of almost 1.4 million acres in Colorado, California and Washington.
"The bill led by U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette includes about 660,000 acres in Colorado, most in low-lying canyon country, plus 630,700 acres in California and 131,700 acres in Washington. The proposal also would award protections for about 1,000 miles waterways to be added to the National Wild and Scenic River Systems.
...
"The Colorado House delegation split along party lines on the bill.
"'We have been working on this legislation for more than 20 years,' DeGette said in a statement. 'The areas that will be protected under this bill are some of the most beautiful and pristine landscapes that our country has to offer. And by officially designating them as wilderness, as this bill does, we will finally be providing them the permanent protection they deserve.'"

Colorado Republicans in the state legislature made their election year priorities clear this week with a slate of legislation targeting reproductive freedoms and LGBTQ Coloradans. First, the "slate of hate":
‘Slate Of Hate’: Opponents Fight 6 Anti-LGBTQ Bills At State Capitol
From CBS4
"Gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender Coloradans see a new wave of hate against them. Six bills targeting their community were at the center of a hearing Thursday at the state Legislature.
"The bills would:
- Ban same sex marriage and bar same-sex-couples from adopting kids.
- Put doctors in prison for providing gender transition treatment to kids.
- Prevent transgender girls from participating in girls’ sports.
- Allow people who have religious objections to refuse housing, jobs and health care to LGBTQ people.
- And make it harder for the state to help LGBTQ kids.
While none of the bills passed, they could have a lasting impact on the 2020 election.
Opponents say the bills are the most aggressive attack on LGBTQ rights in more than a decade.
“I call these bills, ‘The slate of hate,’” said Rep. Sonja Jacquez Lewis, the first LGBTQ state lawmaker from Boulder County.

Colorado Republicans continued their assault against reproductive choice and freedom, bringing bills that would insert politicians in the OBGYN office between a Coloradan and their physician.
Anti-Abortion Scare Tactics Reach Colorado Capitol
From Colorado Times-Recorder
"Legislation that’s seen by reproductive health advocates as an attack on later abortion care was defeated at Colorado’s Capitol yesterday.
"The bill concerns the extremely unlikely scenario in which a baby is born alive after a failed abortion attempt, and would make it a felony for doctors to not offer medical care to that baby.
"'This is not an abstract theoretical concept, but rather a real-life event that really happens,” said Sen. Rob Woodward (R-Loveland), the prime sponsor of the bill.
"Woodward asked the committee to focus on the moment “when there is a newborn baby girl crying and dying alone on a cold steel table.”
"'These decisions take place in the offices you drive by every day,' Woodward added.
"On the contrary, numerous physicians testified before the Senate State, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee, stressing that the scenario that the bill addresses is not one that actually occurs.
"'I have never in my entire career either experienced or heard of a situation where this bill would be necessary,' said OBGYN Sabrina Holmquist. 'This is simply not how abortion care works.'"
This week, Colorado Democrats defeated these anti-LGBTQ bills and a number of these anti-choice bills, which really goes to show why majorities matter!

Join the High Fivers Club!

"What's the High Fivers Club", you ask? It started with a simple idea: There are nearly 1.2 million registered Democrats in Colorado -- what if every single one of them gave just $5 a month to the Colorado Democratic Party (CDP)?
Answer: The CDP would be the best-funded state party in the country -- with zero dollars from corporate PACs and plenty for flipping red seats to blue!
If you haven't given to the CDP yet, here are a few simple reasons why we're asking you today:
- The CDP is the central base that helps recruit volunteers, train candidates, and assist county parties win elections. While the Democratic National Committee provides some limited funds, the reality is it is up to us to raise our own money so we can support Democratic candidates running for office in Colorado.
- We knock on doors and meet with voters to talk about voting Democratic even before we know who our nominees are! As part of the High Fivers Club, you can help us get supplies for volunteers so we can knock on 50,000 more doors before we know our nominee.
- Once we have our nominee, we'll use what we've learned about voters to help them jump-start their Get Out the Voter efforts and stay toe-to-toe with Donald Trump and the Republicans.
