The effort to eliminate more of the worst single-use plastics and make producers responsible for curbing the waste they create is an uphill battle. Your ongoing support has been crucial to the victories we've won on reducing plastic pollution at the state and corporate levels in the past year -- and there's still so much more to do.

Not only is the vast majority of our society's plastic waste being dumped into landfills and our environment (just 9% of all plastic ever made has been recycled), but in fact estimates suggest that production of disposable plastic products is actually increasing year over year.1,2
How is that possible when so many Americans are clamoring for an end to the use of wasteful, throwaway plastics we just don't need, and dutifully putting the plastics we do use in the blue bin?
The public might want bold action to reduce plastic waste, but too often, the companies that make and distribute all of this single-use "stuff" in the first place are getting in the way of progress.
That's where PIRG comes in.
To counter the special interests and win concrete steps toward zero waste, we're doubling down on our efforts to pass policies that both ensure less wasteful plastic enters our lives in the first place, and make producers responsible for curbing their waste.

Our approach is simple but powerful. We research the problem and the best ways to solve it, advocate for those solutions in the halls of power, and organize citizens to convince decision-makers to act.
This model, combined with the support of members like you, has helped us build momentum for bans on the worst single-use plastics -- and now 1 in 3 Americans lives in a state with a robust ban on at least one type of single-use plastic.3
We've also educated the public about "producer responsibility" policies, which help reduce single-use plastic waste at the source by requiring plastic producers to bear financial responsibility for dealing with the waste their products become. Four states have passed producer responsibility laws since 2021 -- and we're just getting started.
Finally, we're calling on major retailers, including Walmart, Costco, Amazon and Whole Foods, to cut down on their wasteful packaging, and to get unnecessary single-use plastics out of their operations. Tens of thousands of citizens have added their voices to these campaigns, helping grow our call so that it's too loud for even the most powerful corporations to ignore.
