Ohio Governor Mike DeWine Week in Review

"For the week ending August 3, 2019"



On *Monday,*Ohio Governor Mike DeWine encouraged farmers in 40 Ohio counties to seek potential relief from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) following the USDA Secretarial disaster designation in their counties or contiguous counties due to rain, flooding, or other weather conditions. By the end of the week, four additional Ohio counties were covered by USDA disaster designations. In June, Governor DeWine hadrequesteda USDA Secretarial disaster designation for Ohio and met with farmers about the effects of heavy rainfall this year.

On *Tuesday*, Governor DeWine visited theJ. Ashburn Jr. Boys & Girls Club to highlight investmentsin his recently signed 2020-2021 state operating budget that focus on student wellness and success.

Also on *Tuesday*,Governor DeWine signed Senate Bill 57, which directs the Ohio Department of Agriculture to draft rules to regulate the licensing and processing of hemp, and which, consistent with the 2018 federal Farm Bill, removes hemp from the controlled substances list.

Also on *Tuesday*, Ohio First Lady Fran DeWine spoke about her experiences at the Ohio State Fair and her focus on helping Ohio's children and familiesduringa meeting of the Ohio General Assembly's House Agriculture & Rural Development Committee and Senate Agriculture Committee at the Ohio State Fair.

On *Wednesday*, Governor DeWine announced the creation of anew law enforcement unit within the Ohio Department of Public Safety to help enhance drug trafficking investigations throughout the state.The creation of the specialized investigative unit, which will operate as part of Governor DeWine's RecoveryOhio initiative, is one of his priority programs funded through the new state operating budget.

On *Thursday,*GovernorDeWine presented awards at the 2019 Ohio State Fair Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, which recognized individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the Ohio State Fair. Awards also were presented to Ohio State Fair Hall of Fame Scholarship recipients during the ceremony.

On *Friday*, Governor DeWine congratulated inductees of the Ohio Agriculture Hall of Fame during a morning ceremony at the Ohio State Fair.

Also on *Friday*,Governor DeWine and State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy Executive Director Steven Schierholt were joined byU.S. Drug Czar Jim Carroll, director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy,to announce that use of the Ohio system used to track prescriptions of controlled medications has now reached record levels.Use of the Ohio Automated Rx Reporting System (OARRS) recently surpassed 1 million daily queries on two separate occasions, a milestone that aligns with data from the American Medical Association that ranks OARRS as the most utilized prescription drug monitoring program in the country.
