But first, I’d like to tell you about someone who’s very special to me: my dad.

As a teenager growing up in a blue-collar Mexican family in the LA area, my dad was my world. I had 3 brothers and sisters – and while my family was short on money, we were long on love and dedication.

My dad showed me the meaning of hard work – and always told us kids we could do anything we put our minds to.

Tomorrow marks 31 years since my wrongful conviction. While in prison for 20 years after being wrongfully convicted, I educated myself, spent hours in the law library, and wrote letters to anyone I thought could help get my case reviewed.

My dad taught me that if you focus on solutions, not problems, you can fix things that are broken. And he was right. In 2011, I was exonerated and became a free man. Justice prevailed.

Now, I'm running for Congress to reform the broken justice system, put the people first and use every tool I have to make the system work for everyone.If there’s one thing my dad taught me, it’s that it takes a village.
