Governor Gretchen Whitmer here – I’m reaching out today to ask you to join me in supporting a dear friend and member of Congress, Hillary Scholten, from Michigan’s Third.

Congresswoman Scholten is a dynamic representative who is already stepping into leadership roles in her freshman class in DC. For the first time in over 50 years, West Michigan is represented in the US Congress by a Democrat and, for the first time ever, by a woman. She was also only one of the six candidates to have flipped a congressional seat in 2022. 

Congresswoman Scholten is the perfect fit for West Michigan–born and raised there by a public school teacher and Grand Rapids Press sports reporter. She’s a talented public interest lawyer, a mom of two kids, a woman of deep faith, and now, a representative that’s already delivering big for her district.

It was a historic victory, and during her first six months in office, Hillary has been hard at work to restore normalcy, common sense, and compassion to Congress. Hillary’s district is also widely considered a bellwether for the presidential election -- meaning that the support you give her now will also help to keep a Democrat in the White House.

We’re proud of our wins in 2022–but make no mistake, Michigan is STILL a swing state. We can’t repeat 2016, when folks thought Michigan was safe, and guess what? Trump won. We’re going to experience backlash for all the great wins we had in 2022, and we have to be ready. The National Republican Congressional Committee has already targeted Hillary’s seat and has been gearing up to drop whatever amount of cash is required to back MI-03. It’s crucial that we help give Hillary the support her campaign needs to fight back against their attacks. The west side of her district is home to extremist Republicans and militia groups who support candidates like John Gibbs, who, if given a chance, would roll back our democratic progress by generations!

We need to support Hillary Scholten not only so she can continue her strong representation for her state, but we need her seat to win back the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. Her work in West Michigan is also delivering key voters we’ll need for our State senate race and the presidency. We can’t win statewide in Michigan without winning in the west side of the state, and Hillary Scholten knows how to win in West Michigan. 

So please, John: West Michigan deserves to have a proven leader and advocate like Hillary Scholten representing them in Congress, and not a candidate who is focused on stripping a woman’s right to vote and a person's right to choose. It’s crucial that we hold this seat.
