This week alone, the NCGOP has advanced multiple bills designed to target LGBT young people and ensure that our children feel less safe in their schools and homes being who they are. Meanwhile, they’ve delayed so much on passing Medical Marijuana—a common-sense, bipartisan priority—that one of that bill’s sponsors has started offering amendments to other bills saying that they can’t go into effect until Medical Marijuana is passed. And as if that wasn’t enough, we’re still weeks away from passing a budget for the next fiscal year—which starts on Saturday, by the way.
And this is with Republican supermajorities in both chambers of the legislature. John, I really don’t know what else to take away from this week except to say that it’s clear that the GOP’s leadership can’t even govern their own party, let alone our state.
John, there’s so much at risk for our state in the next few years—we have serious needs on infrastructure, climate resiliency, and cost of living. But instead of pulling themselves together and working for the good of our state, the GOP is consumed by in-fighting among themselves. They’re too busy pushing divisive culture war issues to take even a few seconds and vote on some of the least controversial legislation we’ll pass this session.
John, it’s time to show our state that there’s a different way. It’s time to show our state that this isn’t how government is supposed to work—that government should be a force for good in our lives. This campaign for Treasurer is just one race for one office, but I believe that we can set an example by focusing on the things our people actually care about: investing in smart infrastructure, attracting good-paying jobs, and managing our money wisely.
I'll be honest: it won’t be easy to get there. Tomorrow night at midnight is our first big reporting deadline of this campaign—it’s when the rest of the state will see what we’ve raised, what we spent, and just how strong this movement is. If we put up a strong number, then we can prove to everybody that North Carolinians are tired of the partisan games and childish behavior from the GOP supermajority, and that our state is ready for a government that actually invests in its people.
