New Video Shows How Local Voters Are Demanding Power to Raise Wages

Our friends at the National Employment Law Project posted a video on how states like Texas have prevented local governments from raising the minimum wage.

The video shows how working people in some states have made progress in restoring local power to raise wages. With some help from voters, Texas's shackling of local governments may not have long to go.

Austin Print Shop Newly Organizes With Teamsters

We are delighted that an Austin printer has been newly certified for the Texas Allied Printing Trades list. Brother Frank Monreal, President of the Council and Executive Vice President of the Graphic Communications Conference of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, reports working people at Horizon Printing have joined Local 4535m of the union.

Monreal said he and Negotiating Committee member Steven Castillo led the drive. The vote to unionize was 17-4, but in what Monreal says was an unprecedented development in his career, all 21 workers in the bargaining unit signed on with the union once the vote was final. A first contract was signed on Jan. 20.

Monreal said Horizon negotiated fairly and the contract delivers improvements, including three additional holidays, an increase in overtime pay, more work, and provisions for job security. Monreal said the job security portion of the contract was particularly important in light of past layoffs.

The Texas AFL-CIO congratulates the union Brothers and Sisters at Horizon Printing and the GCC/Teamsters local for helping build the labor movement in Texas.

CWA and Allies Protest Rep. Cuellar for No Vote on PRO Act

Today, CWA, allied unions, and community organizations gathered to protest Rep. Henry Cuellar at his San Antonio district office for his no vote on the PRO Act. Cuellar represents Texas 28th Congressional District which stretches from San Antonio to Laredo down to the Rio Grande Valley.

Last week the House of Representatives voted on the most sweeping labor law reform in 40 years, the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act (H.R. 2474). This historic legislation will put power in the hands of workers and reverse decades of legislation meant to crush unions.

CWA members and allies came out to voice their disappointment in Rep. Cuellar's for his no vote on the PRO ACT and for turning his back on Texas workers. At the protest members chanted "just say no to Cuellar’s lies! Defend our right to organize!" and "Union YES! Cuellar NO!"
