Dear john,
Despite the 2015 Supreme Court ruling that granted marriage equality for same-sex couples, there is still much work to do. State legislatures continue to pass laws to prevent the mention of LGBTQ+ topics in school and criminalize gender-affirming care for transgender people. These measures seek to normalize discrimination, homophobia, and transphobia, and fly in the face of our country's values of inclusivity and equal rights.
As we saw with the overturning of Roe v. Wade last year, the conservative Supreme Court has been willing to move our country backward, endangering already-established rights and freedoms. In our own state of Texas, a conservative-controlled state legislature has passed anti-LGBTQ+ laws and guidelines, including Governor Greg Abbott's policy that would make gender-affirming care for minors considered child abuse.
Only Congress can prohibit discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity at the national level and in a variety of contexts.
