This morning, in a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court struck down the
longstanding precedent of affirmative action in U.S. colleges and
universities.
Without incentives and laws that remove barriers for minorities in
the United States, we see that our sordid past with racial
discrimination tends to resurface.
According to the Center for American Progress, "one study found that
students of color experience a 23 percentage point decline in
likelihood of admission to highly selective public colleges after an
affirmative action ban goes into effect."
John, the highest court in the land has now ruled in favor
of the radical right on pivotal cases such as this one (Students for
Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President and Fellows of Harvard College),
Dobbs, and others.
We do ourselves no favors as a nation by ignoring our past and the
discriminatory trends that we know are alive and well. However, the
GOP wants to both claim racism isn't real and also bury our past. Of
course, they will pander this SCOTUS decision as a "step away from
racism." Their rhetoric is that racism doesn't exist while defending
blatant racists. If racism is not alive and well, why fear college
courses on African American history? Why ban books explaining the
impact of racism? Why the fear-mongering over a "non-issue?"
