Dear John,

Every year, thousands of people die crossing borders as they try to find safety.

But instead of welcoming them, the UK government wants to deport migrants to Rwanda.

The Court of Appeal has just said the government's ‘Rwanda Scheme’ is unlawful. Will you ask your MP to oppose the plans when the government tries to push them through Parliament?

Ask your MP to oppose the Bill

People who arrive in the UK having fled war, persecution or poverty can find themselves facing a hostile environment that denies them a safe place to live or work. Worse still, many are locked up in prison-like detention centres or deported back to the very place they fled.

Pope Francis has repeatedly called on world leaders to adopt a radically different approach: one that is based on love and compassion.

Marking this year’s World Day of Migrants & Refugees, the Holy Father calls on us to “show maximum respect for the dignity of each migrant… constructing bridges and not walls, expanding channels for a safe and regular migration.”

The UK government isn't doing this. Instead of showing respect and dignity, ministers are trying to make the situation for people seeking safety even worse.

Right now, the government is pushing the Illegal Migration Bill through Parliament. This will effectively shut the door for the vast majority of people needing to claim asylum and threatens to deport them to Rwanda.

It means families fleeing war or facing persecution will be turned away and told they are not welcome. The UN has warned the Bill would be “a clear breach of the Refugee Convention.”

This Bill goes against everything Pope Francis has told us to do for people seeking safety.

Together, we have a chance to stop it. Will you write to your MP, asking them to oppose the Bill and welcome those who need a safe place to live?
